Since the launch of WordPress 19 years ago, its market share has steadily increased. Until March 2022. WP market share for the first time *decreased* – from powering 43.3% of the web in March, to 42.9% in June.
To be sure, the decline is small, and WP remains dominent, with market share roughly 10 times that of its closest competitor, Shopify. Shopify lost a bit of market share in that same period, from 4.4% to 4.2%. Where did that lost market share go? To Wix and Squarespace. Wix went from 2.0% to 2.3%, and Squarespace from 1.8% to 2.0%.
Is this a one-time anomaly or the start of a long-term trend? Time will tell, but after the Wix/WP Kerfuffle I can’t image Matt Mullenweg and the other PIC at WP are happy about losing market share to their aspiring nemesis.
